HULK SMASH!!! An honest review of The Hulk (2008)

So there I was. Alone in the theatre, the scent of tasteless popcorn burning my nostrils. Aparently the projectionist forgot to turn on the movie watcher reel, so i sit watching time trickle by until the movie starts. The employees were busy preparing for the day ahead, but all I cared about was what was about to come on screen; The Incredible Hulk…

Ok so let’s start off with the cast.

Edward Norton as Bruce Banner was amazing. He had that small frame that was associated with banner, the fear that any little thing could set off the transformation into the hulk, and the genuine concern for those around him. Was he as good as Robert Downey Jr playing tony stark? No. But even to compare them isnt fair. I would only use that because they are both in Marvel movies. Norton pulls off the roll perfectly. You see the pain he is going through on a daily basis trying not to transform. His facial expressions are great and the chemistry between him and the rest of the cast is definatly there. Mr. Norton you get an A for this preformance.

Liv Tyler. No she doesnt play an elf princess (to the dismay of andy and the rest of the sparkbox crew lol). She plays the love interest Betty Ross, who just happens to be the daughter of the General who is hell-bent on capturing Banner and disecting him to find out how the hulk came about. This is basically just a support role and she doesnt get an insane amount of screen time. But thats not to say she isnt around a ton. Remember all you Hulk fans, she is the one person able to calm the Hulk and make sure he doesnt destroy everything when the (explitive) hits the fan. She plays her character very well and meshes with everyone pretty good.

Tim Roth plays Abomination/Emil Blonsky. He is a British special forces soldier on loan to the military to help track down the Hulk and take him down. Not much to say about this character because its pretty one dimensional, but he pulls it off very well. You see the anger in his character that he is getting older and realizes he isnt as fast as he used to be even though he has 10x more exp then he did a few years ago. His transformation from soldier to the Abomination is very well thought out and you see the character slowly go mad with power.

And William Hurt. Great pick for the General because of his screen presence and his ability to command a scene. When he speaks, you sit up in your seat a little straighter and pay attention. Although there isnt much character progression since he is always ticked and angry about the Hulk. Very well done though.

And yes, Lou Ferrigno has a cameo and also voices the Hulk!

Overall the cast was perfect. Loved em all and how they portrayed their characters.

Quick note on the effects in this movie. They blend perfectly with the live action that is going on. And let me tell you, there is plenty of action going on in this movie. OMG its amazing. The military vs the HULK is awesome and the fight between Abomination and Hulk is legendary. You find yourself cheering for the hulk to “Smash” his opponent into the ground. Plus the transformation from Banner to Hulk is perfect. The look on Nortons face, the eyes that turn green, and the contorting and crackling of his body as he grows into the massive Hulk is just wow.

Now on to the movie itself. Dont worry all you fans of the Hulk comics and Tv show. This is not a rehash of the last CRAP FILLED movie by Ang Lee. This is more true to the TV show. He becomes the Hulk because of an accidental overdose of Gamma radiation like in the tv show and is on the run, always having to stay one step ahead of the military and keep his identity a secret. You first see Bruce in Brazil working at a bottling plant. He is still trying to get the language down and makes some very funny mistakes. “Dont get me hungry, you wouldnt like me when I’m hungry” is the funniest thing i have ever heard.

Banner is working (kinda) with a scientist code named Mr Blue over emails trying to figure how to take care of the gamma in his system. But all that goes to hell when the military tracks him down and chases him half way around the small town in Brazil. He ends up being trapped in the bottling company where he works, not only evading the military, but also the other workers who hate him. This is where the hulk makes his first appearance. Let me tell you, this is one of the best scenes in a movie I have ever seen.

I really dont wanna get too deep into the story because I dont want to ruin it for you. For all you Hulk fans, SEE THIS MOVIE. For all you non Hulk fans, SEE THIS MOVIE! It is so worth the price of a ticket and will keep a smile on your face the entire time. I came into it with moderate expectations, and they were blown away. The cast, the effects, the FIGHT SCENES, they all make for one hell of a ride. Overall, this is a 9/10 for me. If this would have come out first insted of Iron man, then I would say 10/10 easily. But since it didnt, it falls just slightly lower then Iron man.

This is truly the summer of MARVEL! They are back and better then ever. Move over Indiana Jones, step aside Fat little panda, The Hulk is taking over the box office.

Oh and just so you know. Yes the next villian was introduced. WARNING SPOILER ALERT!!!! Scroll down if you want to know.

Well, have to say, now I have to watch it. I really didn’t care either way but you make it sound very cool. Believe me, you are glad that you didn’t see the happening like I decided to today.

  2. Alex says:

Just noticed this….the character that was introduced wasn’t Brainiac, it’s The Leader. At least I’m pretty sure if it’s at the same point I’m thinking of.

  3. James says:

Ya know, I thought about that too when I saw it. For some reason I always had a hard time determining who was who lol. I stand corrected.
