So what have I been doing that has taken me away from my beloved Sparkbox, you ask?  Well personally I changed jobs. I now no longer work for the evil empire known as Enterprise rent-a-car and work for the slightly less evil empire know as Verizon.  Actually I work for an authorized retailer so it’s more relaxed, fun, and I can wear jeans to work. WOOOO!

Now I know you’re not entirely here to hear about me. You want gaming news, right? Sadly we’re in that time between Christmas and another marketable holiday for video games.  What I can review for you right now is Smackdown vs. Raw 2010.  Now for those of you who aren’t into Wrestling or the games inspired by them, I’m sorry. It’s just what I’ve been playing.  For those of you who are fans (and will get this reference) this review is for the peeps and by the peeps!

OK so the game controls have varied very little from the last game, which is good as the worked pretty well. Naturally they’ve been tweaked and revised adding in “struggle submissions” with a simple click of the right stick. An improvement that actually makes the controls flow better.  The roster is of course updated, but all that means is your created character has new guys to fight.  The best improvement is now you can level up your character’s stats in free play, online fights, story mode, and career mode. A vast improvement over 2009′s only in career mode leveling.  The only addition I didn’t like was the “mixed tag” option.  It’s not that I never teamed with the divas in the last game, it’s that now men cannot fight the women at all. If the male character hits the diva you are instantly disqualified.   It makes it very hard to help your tag partner when all you can do is ask her opponent nicely to please break the pin.  All in all it’s a solid game. It doesn’t feel like I’m playing an expansion of the last one, the new stories are entertaining, and there’s a small reminder every now and then that the game knows its a game by making fun of you or itself.

Hey everyone, it’s Andy!  That’s right, I still exist and sparkboxshow.com isn’t exactly as dead as you may have thought!

I’ve been recently getting alot of emails and youtube messages wondering what has been going on at sparkboxshow.com and with “I am senataur” our greatly popular online short animated series. 

Well, as with most things it’s rather complicated.  Seems that everyone has been doing their own thing this summer and/or has had trouble with work and money(surprise, surprise in this economy!)

I do know I can tell you what I’ve been up to though:  I have been sweating my butt off at work!  Also I have been enjoying the living hell out of Protoype on the xbox 360.  If you haven’t tried that game I HIGHLY suggest you stop reading this and go do so!  I don’t think I am going to write a full review but I would definitely give it at least a 7/10.  That’s not too shabby at all!

I saw a TON of movies.  The good:  Ice age 3, The Hangover(<— go see it now before it leaves theaters!!!), Harry Potter.  The Bad: Orphan and Year One.  I’ve seen more, but obviously if they don’t come to mind, then they aren’t really worht mentioning, are they?

What else?  Well I’ve been trying to arrange podcasting and article schedules to no avail.  Please email your faves on the sparkbox team and demand their return if you do so wish. 

In the meantime I will try my best to get you some back to school content and get our myspace and twitter pages up and going.

So I was stood up by the other members of the Sparkbox Show this year and ended up going to the NYIAS this year alone, until I decided to bring Cerberus and his brother at the last minute that is.  Neither of which are very interested in cars, but at least it made the ride  to and from NYC a little more interesting.

I went this past Saturday, which was the second weekend it was open.  I think that it cut down on the crowd considerably.  It was still a madhouse, but this year I was able to take some pictures without screaming kids and fat bald guy’s heads in the frame.  Although I did have my shiny new Canon with me, so maybe when you have a nice big professional looking camera, you get a little more respect when you are taking pictures than the guys with the iPhones?

When I first walked in I noticed that Cadillac had given up it’s prime entrance location to sit in the far back corner of the show, probably because they hadn’t been up to much this year.  They were replaced by Ford, which was very innovative in the fact that they were giving away a lot of swag, from t-shirts to $50 cash vouchers that you could turn in when test driving a Ford in order to get – that’s right – $50 cash.

Toyota kept their prime location at the other entrance and were giving out wonderful reusable bags for you to put all your pamphlets and poster in.  I’m sure in a few days they unfortunately will be in 100 landfills across the country.  Speaking of swag, I was very impressed this year.  Last year it seemed the economy had really inhibited the giveaways at the NYIAS.  This year they went all out, almost every company had booklets and posters with information about their 2010 lineup to give away.  Some even went as far as to give away folding wooden rulers (Jeep), tshirts (Ford), Keychains and stickers and CD’s (Scion).  Thanks guys!

Every year there is some kind of trend.  Last year it was Fuel cells and in dash multimedia units like Ford’s SYNC.  Some of the higher end cars were sporting turn stabilizing traction control similar to the one BMW has had for a while now, where power is distributed to the outside wheels in a turn to help your vehicle turn with more confidence.  Another was the radar and other sensors in the front of the vehicle to autostop for those of you who like to txt message while in traffic.  BUT mostly this year’s was little cars a bit larger than a smart car that emulated the Scion xB.  Nissan has one coming out called the Cube and Mitsubishi has one they are trying to get safety approved for use in North America.  I know GM has a couple ghost “xB’s”  in the closet in waiting as well.  Get ready for the tiny car movement in America soon ladies and gentlemen, it’s going to look like you are walking around london very soon.  Hopefully we wont have to start driving on the other side of the road any time soon.

Every year there are a few crowd favorites and some “displeasers”.  This year’s favorite car showcase was a tossup between Smartcar and BMW.  BMW always brings a crowd of people that want to be Autobann driving someday, but I was a little surprised by Smartcar.  You couldn’t even sit in one unless you wanted to wait your turn for at least 15 minutes.  Thats pretty amazing if you ask me.  One unfortunate trend this year was to make your companies’ showcase look like the Apple Store.  Of course Porsche, Volvo, and Subaru followed this suit, but surprisingly so did VW!  They weren’t the bad boys of the auto show this year.  This year they were upstairs next to their big brother Audi and super clean and straight forward, not a rebellious display anywhere.  The most disappointing showcase this year was a tossup between Chevy and Subaru.  Although if I had to choose the very worst display I would have to go with Subaru.  They have great cars, that all have the same front, and they decided that it was a good idea for some reason to have almost every car on display be white, adding to the sheer boredom.  Even worse, I sat in a lot of cars while I was there and I can honestly say that Subaru was in the top 3 for uncomfortable seats.

So what were my favorite and least favorite cars at the show this year?  The best looking car there had to be a super modified Mercedes roadster of some kind they were showcasing.  It looked like a “Naboo Royal Cruiser” for the road.  Super Awesome.

If you want to know which car I am buying next when I have mine payed off based on the auto show, it’s a tossup between 3 cars: there was and awesome Nissan roadster convertible there, the BMW 1 series was super amazing in styling and features, and last but by no means least, the most impressive car there for me was the Kia Soul.  The Soul comes in many colors and options packages putting it almost on par with a Scion.  The interior layout and seat quality and comfortability was far beyond my expectations.  It even impressed Cerberus (a leggy fellow)  when he sat in the back because he was almost uninhibited for leg room! (although he was also very impressed with the leg room in the BMW 3 series as well.)  Kia also has another promising car they were showing off there called the Forte, but since we couldn’t sit in it or anything, I really cant tell you much except that it looked like where the Ford Fusion should have headed.

Now your first questions probably is “Why are you asking for new writers?” Well the answer is simple, we all have full time jobs and other things that keep us occupied during the week and even though we try to keep the content going, we can’t keep up with everything that happens out there. Thats where you, the listener/fan comes in. What we want are people who would like to write for the website. And no it does not have to be just video games. It can be music, movies, games, reviews, previews, pretty much anything entertainment related.

This year was the biggest and best yet.  There were plenty of people in costume, lots of free stuff, and we were asked to cover events later this year for various organizations.  I’d say that it went damn well.  Unfortunately we only went Friday and Saturday so we didn’t get to meet one of the guys from Sarcastic Gamer.(sorry about that Frawls)

Where were you in 99’?

I was at the NYC Comic Con on Saturday February 7th 2009.  As soon as I found out I was going I knew that the whole venue would not be for me.  So I scoped out some of the forums online before I went and wanted to see what they were offering.

It was fate!  There was a panel getting together to talk about Star Wars.  The title of the forum was “Where were you in 99?”  It was basically about the release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

So I will ask you, where were you in 99’?  I know where I was!  My father owns a chain of movie theatres in NJ & NY.  He had told me that there would be running a preview of the movie at one of his locations in Sparta NJ.  This was not the midnight show that you normally you would have before these films.  This was the cooler!!!  It was friends, families, and strangers, all who knew someone from somewhere.

Free Pepsi hats where being handed out with the Pepsi and Star Wars logo on it (which I still have) and everyone was hovering in front of the doors just waiting to hear those wonderful words “come on in folks!”  (As my dad normally yells out)

You look around you, and I had a group of friends and co-workers from one of the theatres that I worked at with me.  But, then you look around and the place is mobbed!!!  There are a couple of hundred people there, and they were of all ages.  Some people knew what they were in for, and some people did not.

My father says a little something before the film (as he always does also) and it begins…

Lights go down, sounds comes up, and greatness begins.  To see what people had seen 22 years prior was amazing!  Whether you like the film or not, it is an experience that all, young and old will remember, especially the next generation.  To see those bright yellow letters read, “A long time ago, in a galaxy far away…” sent chills up my spine.

So, that’s where I was in 99’.  But now it’s 10 years later.  A whole new out look on Star Wars is about to begin, The Clone Wars, actually has begun.

It was really cool.  They were also promoting a new movie in theatres called “Fanboys”.

Here is some of the story:

It’s the Halloween party they’ve all been waiting for, to have fun with friends and hang out with fellow Star Wars fans and partners in crime. However, events take a turn when one of their bunch who long ago outgrew his old gang and took on adult responsibilities is suddenly in their midst again. Reconnecting is not easy. But soon, Eric, Windows, Hutch and Zoe realize that Linus will not live long enough to experience what’s been on their minds for ages: The long-awaited theatrical release of Star Wars – Episode I, which is still several months away. Linus once again suggests to his friends what he’s been scheming since fifth grade: Breaking into Skywalker Ranch, this time to steal a print of the movie. Crazy, right? But it might be the only way for Linus to see the movie before he dies. So as insane as it sounds, they take Hutch’s van and embark on a mission to drive across half the country to the Ranch.

I am very much looking forward to seeing it, and it’s in limited theatres now.

So, that concluded my dorkness for the day.  But can you picture it… people dressed up in full Storm Trooper garb, Darth Vader gear, Princess Leia slave wear, & Jedi’s everywhere.  Holding up posters for the film “Fanboys”, is a sight to be seen, that is why I took lots of pictures.

At the end of all this, it makes you proud to be a Star Wars geek!  Whether you are in the theatre, or at a forum in NYC, you will always remember where you were when you heard the sweet sounds of the Imperial March or the Throne Room scene.  Or better yet, this is the only time it public it’s ok to practice heavy breathing like Darth Vader with out looking like a pervert!

Over the last couple weeks we’ve been talking about redoing the look of the website and I’m happy to say that we’ve finally done it, err well I’ve finally done it!

Sparkboxshow.com Version 2.0a – It looks better, but it works better too.  Starting with a complete redesign of the template for more accessibility and then going with a more friendly, yet robust color scheme, we have redesigned everything from graphics to page scripting to make it smoother and better looking from all angles.  

What’s really cool though are the new functionalities involved in the redesign!  There are many more ways to keep updated with the addition of more specific rss feeds, you can track comments and the forums now on the go.  Oh you want to know what else?  New forum software!  that should be all I have to say, but let me humor you with some more details.  

The original design left our forums outdated and not very accessible to our users.  It was a major stumbling block to overcome, but I think we finally did it right.  The new forums allow for even easier usability and are linked directly to your normal sparkboxshow.com login.  No more need to login twice.  Just login and click the forum tab on the top of the page and you are good to go.  The forum is contained entirely within the main site so you can still have access to everything here from the articles to…   umm … well the everything else.

The only downside is that the new site is not super friendly to our dial-up and PDA readers and subscribers.  Sorry guys, maybe when we have time we can figure out some way to please you, but for now broadband is the way to go.  

I hope that the new look and the new forum will give a kind of fresh start to you subscribers.  I look forward to interacting with you on the new forum and would like to say that if you haven’t already tell your friends to check us out, because there should be no reason for anyone to feel embarrassed about the look of the site as much more professional looking and a lot less feeble…  (except for that damn data table error that keeps popping up.)

Hey everyone!  Andy here, seems like a while since you’ve heard from us here at sparkboxshow.com?  Well that’s because it has been a while!  

I’ve got good news though.  No the podcast is not available as a sepository…  The good news is that after a really rough and busy summer, we have decided to bring you a bigger, better, semi-weekly podcast.  On top of that, we may even start writing articles again!  Oh, but if you want to expedite that you may want to email chris, alex, james, or jungletrek directly and get a flame under their buns!  =)

My top 5 coming out in no particular order are (all xbox 360 games oddly enough)

Fable 2 :

It’s the latest edition of Fable, the super popular RPG game from the original xbox console.  It features multiplayer, I believe in the form of coop, over xbox live and local splitscreen.  Starting out as a street rat, you bulk up your stats and your physique as you make progress in the game.  The world changes with the decsisions you make in game.  You fight with guns, melee, and magic.  You can buy and own everything in the game, from weapons to barns to villages and land.  You can get married, own pets, have children, watch them grow up, and have them fight alongside you.  The graphics look WoW-ish but good enough for me.

Left for Dead:

A multiplayer survival horror FPS by Valve.  Sort of like CoD4 meets Hunter: the reckoning.  Finally a survival horror that is worth me wasting my time on.  A game designed particularly for multiplayer gameplay.  Looks amazing, as I’ve been bombarded with peeks at this game for a very long time now.  The AI is revolutionary, the multiplayer experience looks inventive yet easy to pick up and play.  Players can play with up to 7 of their friends, with half playing as zombies and half playing as survivors.  All I know is that I can’t wait for this game.

Too Human: 

It steps into the light, steps out of the light,  but regardless this game is going to eat alot of my time when it finally comes out.  Sort of like Diablo 2 meets Hellgate: london for the xbox 360.  It has four player coop.  You can upgrade your character, who is one of several different base archetypes, in many different ways.  The buzz is that no 2 characters will be alike due to the diversity of weapons and abilities you can hold.  I can’t wait to prove/disprove that one…

Gears of War 2: 

The first game was one of the best games I had ever played when it came out.  I spent countless hours fighting the Locust with my friends in online coop, and countless more hours cutting people in half with the chainsaw bayonet in multiplayer death match games.  They say this one is going to be bigger, better, and more baddasser.  Well I’m game!  I saw the trailer and now I can’t wait to pull out my crosshairs, accidently fill my friend’s butt with lead, and have Marcus simply say “You’re blocking my shot!”

Ninja Gaiden 2: 

The first game enthralled me with it’s hyper fast fighter-mechanics and a 3d open-ish world.  I never had more fun or frustration up until the time I got that game.  If this one is anything close to the action in the first one, now with having a HDtv so I can actually see what is going on, I am not going to put it down right away.  Techmo’s ninja looks like he has lots of weapons and tons of moves up his sleeve once again for fighting the weird hordes of shadow ninjas and giant boss characters, that have oodles of real ninja blood inside them.  The addition of being able to buy different skins for your character on the xbox marketplace might make some people angry, but I just think it’s damn cool.

At a close second were:
Blastworks (for the wii)
Alone in the dark
Saints Row 2

#5- The new Diablo, they’re working on it, I know they are. Blizzard can’t lie to me. This would be at #1, but I don’t know how long I can hold out…before I just let go. (who am I kidding)

Runner up is Bionic Commando………I don’t know how I feel about butcherings of classics such as this. Especially when his arm now looks like something out of Akira.

#4- Starcraft 2 – I really enjoyed the first one. Though most of the time I found myself getting hammered. The new classes and ships are just unbelieveable. I always liked how there were definitive differences between the classes besides just the attacks, so playing a different side is kinda like playing a refresh to the game.

#3- Too Human – This game looks bad ass, that’s what it boils down to. I’ve been keeping my eyes on it like an admirer from afar. The gameplay looks so much fun and the story isn’t half that bad either.

#2- Spore – creating my own creature from micro-organism to sentient being is just cool. Amazing amount of customization. Mindless uncomplicated fun. The cool concept of my creatures being able to travel and colonize other planets that people might visit and interact with.

#1- Star wars force unleashed – kotor 1 + 2 were amazing, but playing as Vader’s hidden apprentice and destroying everything in your path? using ships to bludgeon everyone? what’s not to like? Realistic physics are wonderful to play with plus everything just looks so buttery smooth. I’m guessing MS and Sony will capitalize on the lightsaber accessories to get in on wii’s territory.

#5 Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
-This is for Shawnna, I couldn’t think of another one and she can’t wait for it. she’s a huge Harry Potter fan and has played all the games. they are pretty fun and harder then you’d think. yeah I’ll be playing too. I;m a big dork and it was probably my favorite book in the series. Go ahead, laugh! you know you’d read them too if you thought you wouldn’t get caught.

#4 Lego Indy
- I loved lego star wars and it was a game that Shawnna and I could both play and i didn’t have to feel bad cause I wasn’t shooting at her, lol

#3 Guitar Hero Areosmith
-I’m a huge Guitar hero junky. just listening to the radio makes me want to play. also Areosmith is one of my favorite bands of all time

#2 Soul Calibur IV
-One of, if not my favorite fighting series of all time. I do feel a little gyped this time that PS3 gets Darth Vader and we get Yoda, but hey, it could be cool. I just love that this series uses weapons and takes into account that you can deflect and strike. throw in fully destructable background stuff and it’s golden!

#1 Gears of War 2
-This time I can start playing right away. last time I waited to get it and missed out on the online mania and playing with you guys a lot. also I loved the story, characters, and the overall gameplay. and the trailer rocked

#5 Red Faction: Guerilla.

I didn’t think it would happen, but it has. After the utter failure of Red Faction 2, THQ has decided to make the third installment. Taking place 50 years after the first Red Faction (looks like they took the Highlander 2 route and decided that they shouldn’t ever mention part 2 ever again), the colonists of mars are trying to break away from the governing Earth Defense Force (EDF). Set in an open world envirnonment, players are once again able to destroy everything they see. Which was removed in part 2 and led to the lack of replay and fun. There are many multiplayer modes, some set on total destruction! So get ready everyone. Snag some explosives and blow a hole in the wall next to the door you cant find the key for. Its time for the rise of the Red Faction.

#4 -Too Human

I’ll have to agree with Alex on this one. Yes its been pushed back and back and back for a few years now. But that could mean they are taking the time needed to make it an amazing game. Or they could just be stalling to find a way out. Only time will tell.

#3 – Saints row 2

Yup its time to go back to your old hood and bring the Saints back to the limelight. Featuring limitless customization of your character, crib, gang, and vehicles (yes you can pimp your ride). This time around you will never put it down. Featuring 2 player Co-Op (yes you can do the whole game coop), over 40 missions, and a 50% larger city then before, who could refuse picking this up? Did I mention the human shield feature? Oh yeah baby! Wait, I mean FO’ SHIZZLE!

#2 – Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed tells the story of Darth Vader’s secret apprentice as he hunts down the remaining Jedi. Set in the dark times between Episode III and Episode IV, the story explores the aftermath of Order 66, which called for the immediate execution of all Jedi, as well as the rise of Darth Vader leading into the Original Trilogy

Ok so tons of force powers, insane graphics, and lightsabers. Do you need anything else? Yes? Well christ you are hard to please. Just check out the Lucas Arts site and see for yourself. http://www.lucasarts.com/games/theforceunleashed/#/game_info/overview/

I’ve already pre-ordered this Chuba. Now to play the waiting game.

#1 – Gears of War 2

Gears of War 2 continues the story of Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad, locked in an increasingly desperate battle against the nightmarish Locust Horde for the survival of humanity. Gears of War 2 is an epic saga of survival, loss, and retribution.

Yeah it’s a sequal, but by god its going to rock. You can play Coop as before. But with the best addition ever….. 4 PLAYER COOP ON XBOX LIVE! Yeah you heard me! Also the game will feature multiple save files and multiple difficulty settings on a single co-op session. So for example, one player can play on Hardcore, while the other plays on Casual, and the game will be aware of these different difficulty settings so when the players take different paths, they will have different experiences based on the chosen level of difficulty.

Hey everyone! The sparkboxshow.com RSS has been updated to help load the episodes on iTunes in a better fashion.  The old feed is now the podcast enclosure only feed. If you use an aggregator to tune into our latest news feed and show, aka the yellow button on the right, then you need to update it.  Remove the feed from your aggregator and click on the yellow RSS button on the right OR change the feed link to:

http://feeds.feedburner.com/sparkboxshow/news 

If you want to subscribe via iTunes, make sure you use the iTunes icon on the right.  If you use the yellow RSS button, you will be getting enclosures from the news feed, content will revolve out, and it is not the same as the official iTunes feed.  If you have downloaded all previous episodes on iTunes, you may want to delete them and download the new feed list of episodes to clean it up some.
